"Get Out" A Major Winner At The AAFCA Awards Ceremony; Many Black Hollywood Stars In Attendance (3154 hits)
The African American Film Critics Association in sponsorship with The Home Depot Retool Your School initiative recently hosted their annual AAFCA Award ceremony at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California. Black Hollywood came out in full support to promote the achievements of minorities in the arts and entertainment industry. Guests included Jordan Peele, Storm Reid, Laz Alonso, Sherri Shepherd, Ava DuVernay, Mike Epps, Paula Patton, and more.
Get Out was a major winner with Jordan Peele accepting the award for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Screenplay as well as the night’s biggest honor, the Horizon Award. Another major highlight of the evening was Armani Martin of Clark-Atlanta University winning The Home Depot’s 72-Hour Build A Film Challenge. Martin’s film was selected out of hundreds of submissions from emerging filmmakers from around the nation who were tasked with creating a film concept promoting life on an HBCU campus.
Martin was brought onstage by Melissa Brown, Senior Marketing Manager at The Home Depot and actor Laz Alonso who introduced her film, which focused on one of the cornerstones of HBCUs, “Band Life”- to the Hollywood heavy weights in attendance.
