Someone asked me about the ISBN numbers and the importance of them. I was also asked if I was worried that Amazon would steal my work; by me publishing my book on the site? First, the ISBN numbers are important to help identify your book in whatever format. That number is directly attached to the book and the publisher as well. As a self-publisher, it is important for people, companies, bookstores, and libraries to be able to associate that number with your name. I found a great article that goes into more detail about ISBN’s. http://www.thebookdesigner.com/2010/11/isb... I would also suggest that anyone looking to purchase, ISBN’s not purchase used numbers or discontinued numbers unless you really know what you are doing and trust the company. I have read horror stories of self-published finding out that the number was a dud, or that their information was not associated with the number. So be careful and do your research. Personally, I recommend using the official site for ISBN’s, which is Bowker. The link that I use to get to the site is https://www.myidentifiers.com/myid_sign_in... Second, I am not worried about Amazon stealing my work. Amazon is just a platform that can be used to sell your product. Books are another product right, and if you publish your work under your name. Legally it is yours and yours alone. That is why it is important to purchase your own ISBN identifiers. Why would you want someone/company to be identified as the publisher when you put in the work? I hope that the information provided above helps those who need it. It took me almost a year to research ISBN’s and there importance when it came to publishing.
