Looking for 16 Black Belt high school students for an all-expense paid ASU summer camp on transportation! (1215 hits)

Local high school students who have an interest in pursuing a career in the transportation industry have just gotten a "leg-up" on students in other areas because of a special Federal transportation grant awarded to Alabama State University, which will introduce them into these specific areas of study.

ASU’s Division of Continuing Education, in partnership with ASU’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, has been awarded a $44,400 grant from the Federal Highway Administration and the Alabama Department of Transportation.

The grant will be used to host the 2014 National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) at ASU, a residential program that will introduce 16 ninth and 10th grade students from Montgomery and Alabama’s Black Belt region into learning more about the many promising careers in transportation.

The camp is free of charge and includes room and board at ASU for these high school students.

Camp administrators need local and Black Belt area students, teachers or their parents to nominate them so the 16 spaces for students will be filled by May 1 with students who have an interest in the transportation field.

“The dual mission of the program is to enhance employment opportunities in transportation for young people in underrepresented groups and to help motivate and prepare them to become an important part of the transportation workforce of the 21st century,” said Dr. Carl Pettis, NSTI director.

The NSTI program will begin May 31 and will run through June 28.

For student criteria and additional information, please visit www.alasu.edu/nsti or contact the NSTI Director, Dr. Carl Pettis, at 334-229-4465, or the NSTI Program Coordinator, Dr. Michelle Foster, at 334-229-6842.
