What You Need To Know About Genetic Predispositions & Diabetes (640 hits)

Did you know?

Having a genetic predisposition to type II diabetes means that you are at increased risk NOT that you will develop the disease. Various lifestyle factors are important in the development of diabetes. Being overweight or obese is the single biggest risk factor. In fact, 90% of type II diabetics are obese. Exercise is extremely essential in both the prevention and management of diabetes. Besides being a key method for weight loss/control, exercising muscles take up excess sugar in the bloodstream reducing the overall need for insulin.

This is important in two ways:
1. If you are currently a diabetic, but not on insulin, regular exercise can keep you off of it.
2. If you are currently a diabetic on insulin, exercise can reduce the doses of insulin needed on a daily basis.
