Friday, February 3rd was National Wear Red day. Women across the country dressed in red or wore red in joining efforts to raise awareness about the the number killer of women in America, heart disease.
Most people identify heart disease as primarily associated with men or older men and that cancer is the leading cause of death are much surprised to discover it's really heart disease. Facts show that women suffer 1.7 times higher rates in related deaths compared to men. Even more shocking is that primary care physicans don't know that heart disease kills more women each year. In addition that number climbs in nearly 50% of African-American women. A recent study presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Stroke Association reported a 17% increase in strokes among women ages 15 to 34 years old. This is linked to obesity as a major risk factor.
While Women Healthy Heart month helps to make women aware, the Go Red for Women Campaign helps focuses more awareness for steps women can take to improve healthy hearts.

Over 250,000 women die each year for a heart attack
More than half of those die suddenly for heart conditions
Women more often present typicals signs of a heart condition without classic chest pain.
One study suggests women are often misdiagnosed than men as having heart disease.
