I used to believe I did not need prepaid legal MY STORY it could be yours!! (674 hits)

One of my stories happened years ago when my son asked if I could put him on my insurance. Being a mother, naturally I said sure, even though he was not living with me at that time. He thought about it and decided not to however, I had called for a quote already. The insurance company proceeded to change my plan and send me out a bill covering him. When I called to say that he chose not to, they sounded a little upset but they changed the policy back. A few years later I received a bill in the amount of 5,000 from the insurance company. They said that because I did not make them aware that my son was a legal driver in my house when he turned 17 they were billing me what I would have been charged if I had reported it. Needless to say I was certain that I was not going to pay them so every time I got a bill I discarded it. Several years later I got mail from the courts saying that the matter had been settled in court and the judge added interest and the bill was now 205,000. I almost passed out. At that time I had never heard of prepaid legal but I was fortunate enough to have a good friend who was an attorney look at it. Well he was able to get it knocked back down to the original 5,000 then I had to basically go through hoops to get documentation that my son did in fact have insurance. The attorney for the insurance company called me relentlessly and even came to my home and banged on my door. I did finally submit all my paper work to the company and the bill was reduced to 240.00 for lapsed coverage. The company said that I had to submit the payment to their attorney which I did. He sent my payment back and said we were going to court for the 5,000.00. My attorney friend then sent the company a letter saying that we were going to sue for harassment if we could not get this issue resolved. The president of the company then sent me a letter telling me to submit my payment and the matter would be considered closed. This whole process took five years.

My point is this, we all have stories. The beauty of prepaid legal is that when these situations arise, all we have to do is make one phone call. They are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I was speaking to my son earlier this evening about prepaid legal. He is a web designer for several famous people including Mr. Steve Harvey. He has to have an attorney ready all the time but it is a business expense for him. I told him that he was blessed to be living like the wealthy where attorneys are concerned because legal representation for the middle class is almost non-existent read this:

How Much Can You Expect to Pay for Attorneys?

Rates for legal fees vary based on location, experience of the lawyer, and the nature of the matter. Believe it or not, rates may vary anywhere from $50 an hour to a $1,000 an hour or more. The following data regarding average attorneys' fees is based on information provided in the 2009 Billing Rates and Practices Survey; which was a study conducted by Incisive Legal Intelligence on the billing rates and practices of attorneys in small and mid-sized firms.

In rural areas and small towns, lawyers tend to charge less, and fees in the range of $100 to $200 an hour for an experienced attorney are probably the norm. In major metropolitan areas, the norm is probably closer to $200 to $400 an hour. Lawyers with expertise in specialized areas may charge much more. Here are some national averages to help you get a general idea.

The national average billing rate is $284 per hour
Firms with 2 to 8 lawyers have a national average billing rate of $262 per hour
Firms with 76 to 150 lawyers have a national average billing rate of $295 per hour
Firms with more than 150 lawyers have a national average billing rate of $333 per hour By Region: Northeast ($319 per hour), West ($296 per hour), South ($276 per hour) and Midwest ($264 per hour) In addition, you can expect to be charged at an hourly rate for paralegals and other support staff. A good paralegal's time, for example, may be billed out at $50 to a $100 an hour or perhaps more. It would not be unusual for a legal secretary's time on things like document production to be billed out at perhaps $25 to $50 an hour.
