The author Anne Rice, best known for her vampire novels, made waves last week when she declared on her Facebook page that she had "quit being a Christian." Twelve years after her return to Catholicism, Rice said she still believed in God, but that, "In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life."

I saw Don Lemon's interview with her on CNN last night and it appears that she's objecting to the "hatred" that the church has inflicted on these various issues. She said she had people from the church responding to her on her facebook page saying she shouldn't make comments about Pope Benedict and asked her what kind of Catholic was she. Her response was to let them know she quit their group if that was the bigger issue for them. She says she hasn't left God so I suppose that's the most important thing!

Me, too. I've left the church for a "season" and came back to a totally different denomination which I think suits me better.
