AKOMA, in its first year, was featured at numerous local programs and concerts. On June 22, 1996, AKOMA made her debut concert and established the Nona Patterson Chambers Scholarship in honor of her elder member and adopted choir mother. In the first year, Mother Nona’s Scholarship was awarded to three recipients. Since that time, AKOMA has awarded almost sixty college-bound young women of African descent, the Nona Patterson Chambers Scholarship.
