Remembering THE Greatest Entertainer Who Ever Lived!
For the rest of my life, I will remember the moment that I found out that Michael Jackson was dead... I was gathering my things as I prepared to leave my office for the day. It was 5:50 p.m. (CST) and as I stood to leave, I flipped back over to my email one last time, as I usually do. The first thing that caught my eye was the title of one of my messages, Michael Jackson, Dead at 50." I gasped as my hands flew to my mouth. I leaned on the desk for support as I opened the message which featured a large picture of Michael with His name, birthdate and death date.
Tears filled my eyes for this beautiful, talented man whose life was never really lived in a normal sense. My tears began to fall as I rushed out of my office fumbling with my keys, trying to get to the radio and more news. With each report from various the radio stations, my sadness grew.
By the time I got home, my two younger daughters, HUGE fans of Michael (we all are) had heard the news. Toya, the twenty-two year old had already texted me in tears when she found out. I was stunned, numbed by this news, and even now, my heart is aching.
As a young girl, growing up in a small Louisiana town, I LIVED for the Saturday morning episodes of "The Jackson Five" cartoon program and for any other shows that Michael and his brothers would be on! Back then, I had constant debates with my school friends over which of those cute brothers was in fact the cutest! I thought Jermaine was too cute!
We grew up with Michael. We hung onto every shred of news, every television appearance, every 45, because in them we had hopes that our own lives would be better. I feel like a member of my own family has died.
My sadness is only compounded by the news reports which focus on the molestation charges, of which he was cleared, and his problems with addictions, and what I am sure will turn into a custody battle that will make the Anna Nicole Smith debacle seem tame... I was and am angered by how cavalierly people are already treating his contributions to this world. Comparisions to Elvis and Sinatra, saying that it's hard to know who was the most talented upset me to no end! Sinatra and Elvis were two dimensional compared to Michael Jackson who was a singer, songwriter, choreographer, producer and philanthropist! Comparisions...there really are none!
