In Memory of Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns, Holocaust Museum Guard (270 hits)

Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns, the security guard who was shot at the Holocaust Memorial Museum this morning has died of his injuries in hospital. He was 39 years old. It is believed he was shot by James Wenneker Von Brunn, when he walked in to the museum and opened fire on the guard. Von Brunn is in critical condition.

Authorities say that Von Brunn fired at Stephen Tyrone Johns, hitting him, and it was at that point that two other security guards fired upon Von Brunn, hitting him.
A statement was issued today: "Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns died heroically in the line of duty today," a late-afternoon museum statement said. The museum will be closed tomorrow in memory to Johns. Source: usatoday.com

WASHINGTON (AP) — A security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum who was fatally shot Wednesday was described as a warm man with a wonderful smile who acted courageously when the gunman opened fire in the building.
Sara Bloomfield, director of the museum, described Johns as "a great friend who greeted us every day with a wonderful smile — and he will be missed."

"Obviously, there are no words to express our grief and shock," she said.

Johns, a 1988 graduate of Crossland High School in Maryland, worked for Wackenhut Services Inc., based in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., that has contracted security services at the museum since 2002, according to a company statement. Johns had been posted at the museum since joining the firm in 2003. The museum has about 70 officers and supervisors on the force.
