The Genetic Counselor III will provide genetic counseling following established genetic counseling practice guidelines in a variety of settings including cancer genetics clinic, prenatal clinic, pediatric clinic, cardiovascular clinic, neurology clinic and other settings as appropriate. Demonstrates knowledge, competency skills and intervention techniques in GC clinical services.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for analyzing the intake information and determining if appropriate appointments have been scheduled.
Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based upon analysis of risk, benefit and cost.
Ensures proper completion of counseling paperwork.
Interacts and communicates regular with the medical geneticist(s). Responsible for the communication of both normal and abnormal results and coordinating appropriate follow-up with medical geneticist and/or supervising physician.
Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling regarding genetic conditions; makes referrals for ongoing care and support.
Acts as consultant to referring physicians regarding highly specialized genetic information pertinent to the management of their patients.
Participates in regular staff meetings; works to establish her/himself as a team member, providing coverage for colleagues as necessary.
Provides genetic counseling in accordance w/applicable standards of professional care. Attends continuous education courses, attends meetings, and reviews medical literature. Stays current in GC field.
Demonstrates knowledge, competency skills and intervention techniques in GC clinical services. Provides case management for complex genetic cases, including coordinating medical recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling.
Contributes to quality/development of clinical services, participates in specialty sections, and coordinates specific services or specific projects.
Actively participates in outreach, education, and training activities.
Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge, competency skills and expertise in delivery of all GC clinical services.
Leads other counselors, clinical programs or research projects, as needed. Serves as mentor for new/inexperienced staff. Coordinates and delivers education & training.
Coordinates regional or national projects and/or committees, and may participate on regional or national projects and/or committees.
