Job Description
RESEARCH ASST I (Undergraduate Student/Work Study)
Job Summary
Undergraduate researchers will work weekly schedules with times based upon the needs for the lab. The undergraduate researchers are expected to be friendly and approachable to all members working in the lab space and to work safely.
Responsibilities*
Assist with setting up reactions
Working up reactions
Purification of compounds
Analysis
These tasks include but are not limited to:
Handling glassware
Handling/working with needles
Handling/ working with reagents, solvents, and chemicals
Be prepared and excited to work in lab on the days research will be completed
Maintain a neat, up to date lab notebook
Know locations and appropriate usage of all safety equipment
Follow all departmental safety rules
Ensure good housekeeping in the lab by doing the following:
Cleaning up after themselves
Making sure all solvent bottles are refilled after use
Washing dishes as they are used
Return materials to their assigned location
Wiping down benchtops/hoods
Cleaning the balances after use
Perform other routine laboratory tasks such as making or testing reagents, setting up and testing instrumentation or equipment.
Required Qualifications*
Must be a currently enrolled UM-Flint Undergraduate student
Successful completion and understanding of organic chemistry I & II (330 & 332)
Successful completion and understanding of organic chemistry labs I & II (331 & 333)
Desired Qualifications*
Previous lab experience
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Modes of Work
Onsite The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
