In the English language, numerous words have multiple definitions. A slight variation of a sentence structure can transform a word from a noun to a verb. In preparation for Women of Power’s Women’s Weekend, I began to study with intensity the word “matter”. The theme of the 17th Annual Women’s Weekend is “Matters of the Heart”
The word “matter” has several definitions, listed below are a few: (dictionary.com)
- physical substance in general
- that which occupies space
- an affair or situation under consideration
- to be of importance
- having significance
It has been stated “that the mind perceives, while the heart experiences” my younger self had no concept of the depth of this statement. Nor, was I able to recognize the gravity of having the ability to guard, protect and keep my heart with diligence. Even forewarned, I didn’t or rather I wouldn’t admit I lived from my heart strings. I was making decisions based on a fleeting or ever changing emotion.
I was living in the midst of the matter. I was Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, watching my world whirl through the air, however in my life, this was not a dream.
Immaturity is a stage which opens the gate to “matters” which in some cases are extremely relevant to proper growth and development. A matter or situation occupies significant space in our mind. A matter can consume your every thought. During this invasion of “rented” space, you become the matter. As Proverbs 4:23 states, “everything you do, flows from it.” I use the term “rented” space, because there’s a price to pay, when you are held hostage to a person, a situation, or a cause of which brings no value to the “space”.
Maturity on the other hand, brings with it, exposure of the matter. Maturity shines a light on the matter; making it visible not only to the natural eye, but to the physical eye as well. A matter addressed with a level of maturity, deposits wisdom, and allows a more in depth understanding of the root of the matter.
While, you may be in the midst of the matter, don’t allow the matter to be in the midst of you, your decisions, nor your actions.
