Abstract: You don't want to miss this Part Three of our Series dealing with divorce in 2014! We are going to deal with the selfish attitudes that often accompanies divorce. Who even thinks about how their children are going to be affected by their divorce? How does marital conflict and divorce harm children? Many years ago, the wicked began to circulate a myth that if parents are unhappy, then their children are unhappy, too. So it was then presumed that divorce could help both parent and child. But now there is an enormous amount of research on divorce and children and it all points to the same stubborn truth: Our children suffer when moms and dads split up. (And divorce doesn't make mothers and fathers happier, either.) Why does certain kinds of marital discord have such profound effects on a child's physical and emotional health, as well as their ability to get along with their peers? Whether a couple is married, separated, or divorced; when a mother and father display hostility and contempt for each other, why do their children ultimately suffer so much?
Facts about Divorce: Research comparing children of divorced parents to children with married parents shows:
(1) Children from divorced homes suffer academically. They experience high levels of behavioral problems. Their grades suffer, and they are less likely to graduate from high school.
(2) Children whose parents divorce are substantially more likely to be incarcerated for committing a crime as a juvenile.
(3) Because the custodial parent's income drops substantially after a divorce, children in divorced homes are almost five times more likely to live in poverty than are children with married parents.
(4) Teens from divorced homes are much more likely to engage in drug and alcohol use, as well as s*xual intercourse than are those from intact families.
