They tell us to put slavery behind us, yet they give us accolades when we portray ourselves as such...
All too often black women are underrepresented, misrepresented, and told that for the exception of a few, they are not beautiful. I care because for far too long in the black community (at least as far as women are concerned) good looks have equated to light skin, light eyes and long, loose flowing hair. As if the less connected you look to Africa, the more acceptable you are. And here, finally, a DARK SKINNED, KINKY HAIRED, unbelievably gorgeous, insanely talented black woman is here redefining what it is to be beautiful. Just when we and everyone else told us this was a curse. Something that made you less-than. For all the women that were ever put down for their deep colored skin or "nappy" hair. That you TOO are beautiful. YOUR Black is beautiful too.
