Patrick's ex-husband says the (Missing) Kalamazoo doctor's refusal to get mental help led to their divorce (2471 hits)

January 29, 2014 (PORTER, Ind.) (WLS) -- Several police agencies searched Lake Charles in northwest Indiana last week for clues in the case of a missing Michigan doctor. Police said the search did not yield any results. Doctor Taleka Patrick of Kalamazoo, Michigan, went missing December 5. Her car was found on Interstate 94 in Porter County, Indiana later that night. The 30-year-old doctor failed to show up for work as a resident on December 6 in Michigan. Her car was found 100 miles away.

KALAMAZOO, MI – Shortly after they met in 2006, Dr. Teleka Patrick told her future husband of how “A Beautiful Mind,” was her favorite flick. The movie, which starred Russell Crowe and won an Oscar for best picture, tells the story of renowned American mathematician John Nash and his struggles with mental illness. “She said, ‘That’s my story,’” Ismael “Smiley” Calderon recalled recently of Patrick, 30, his wife of six years.

Now, Calderon, who lives in California, says he believes his ex-wife’s own mental health issues, which he says led to their 2009 separation and 2012 divorce, may also be behind her Dec. 5 disappearance in Kalamazoo and he fears the worst for Patrick. His concern is shared by her family who, late Thursday, issued a statement on the “Find Teleka” Facebook page saying, “We believe she has met with foul play and wholeheartedly believe that she is in danger.”

“I believe some predator took advantage of her,” Calderon said. “… Or she’s being held against her will, or the worst.” 'She was ... very intellectual' Calderon, a coordinator in the school of science at Chapman University in Orange, Calif., said he and Patrick met one another in January 2006 on the dating website, Match.com, and immediately hit it off. “She was very verbose, very intellectual, so we connected in our writing,” Calderon recalled. “… At that moment, already in her mind, she already had concluded that we were going to be married before I had even met her in person … She definitely felt the conviction, a strong conviction.”

Calderon said that early on in the couple’s relationship, Patrick confided in him that during her time as a student at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala., where she completed her undergraduate studies, she heard voices that she thought came from God. Calderon said the he was not concerned by the revelation, convinced that Patrick had put the issues behind her when they met in 2006. “It didn’t’ freak me out because we had a very deep relationship,” Calderon said. “I’m a believer in God making miracles happen … I thought it was awkward but I thought it was strong belief.”

However, other complications arose in their relationship, according to Calderon.
