Farrakhan: ‘We are not perfect,’ support Jackson family BY JAMES SCALZITTI Staff Reporter/jscaliztti@suntimes.com June 29, 2013 12:00PM
Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan made a public show of support for Jesse Jackson Jr., his wife Sandi and the entire Jackson family Saturday, telling the audience at the Rainbow-PUSH headquarters that no one, including the indicted former congressman and his wife, is perfect, and that imperfection is a measure of the presence of God.
“I am here to show support for Rev. Jackson, his family and PUSH,” Farrakhan said, dressed in a gray pin-striped suit and sounding robust in an address that lasted just over 10 minutes.
In particular, the controversial minister said he was at Rainbow-PUSH, 930 E. 50th, to support “Jesse Jr. and Sandi in this hour.”
The couple are scheduled for sentencing next week.
Jackson Jr. admitted he used campaign funds for personal use, including the purchase of furniture and expensive jewelry and former 7th ward Ald. Sandi Jackson pleaded guilty to not paying income taxes on some $600,000 that she stole.
On Friday, federal prosecutors made a request for the government to seize two homes from the former congressman and his wife.
Farrakhan on Saturday said that Jesus “knows we are not perfect but we are on the road to perfection.
“When our defects are manifested this is the time for God to be praised...None of us are holy, not one. None of us come through this life without making a mistake, or committing a sin.”
Farrakhan said that the Rev. Jackson and his family “have done so much for so many,” and made sacrifices so that they could serve others, and “this is a time for us to come together and bear each other up.”
Directing comments to the Jackson family and those in attendance at Rainbow PUSH, he said, “Don’t look down, look up. Don’t feel sad, rejoice.” Farrakhan said.
He also told the crowd, “let’s stand with Rev. Jackson, Jesse Jr. and Sandi. God is not finished with any of us yet.”
Farrakhan recalls how many people came together at PUSH to pray for him when he faced his own challenges with his health.
