Celebrations of Cinco de May has truly grown among Americans. Although the official holiday of Mexico, it is not their independence day. Cinco de Mayo or in English The Fifth of May celebrates a symbolic victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Although the French was still in control of the country for 6 more years during that time period. Cinco showed and kept the people optimistic in their victory. The American adventure of Cinco de Mayo followed Chicanos in 1960 who introduced the holiday and it's unique reason for celebration. Now Americans are familiar with the holiday each year. Cinco de Mayo is often compared to the Irish green of St. Patrick's day with parties and drinking, and dancing.
What can I say...Americans like to party! Just give them a holiday!
