CUTS IN FOOD STAMPS PROGRAM MAY HURT THE ELDERLY (591 hits)

A large provider of the nation's hunger relief program Feeding America warned in late August 2012 that cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program SNAP which was formerly known as food stamps announced that many of the nation's seniors are at risk of going hungry. This is based on The Farm Bill passed by House Agriculture Appropriations Committen in July as cuts of 16 billion from SNAP. These significant cuts would cause 2 to 3 millions to lose their food stamp assistance entirely. In addition, 500,000 households would have their SNAP benefits slashed by an average of $90 a month. This places many seniors living on fixed incomes in choices of eating much less on the dinner table or having neglect basic necessities of shelter and clothing. Most of SNAP households with seniors receive only an average of $111.00 a month. The report stated that nearly 16% of SNAP households are ones with seniors.
Recent news has highligted that as of June 2012 46 million households are on a food stamps program. That's about 14% of households in every state. The national news also mentioned that number is rapidly growing as Americans struggle with basic meals daily. Household with aging Americans with fixed incomes often are more likely to have less food, and rely on food stamps for their day to day food supply.
