Oooh Quincy Jones – you got a silver tongue and I like it! On Tuesday, Spotify, the greatest invention since the printing press, brought legendary music producer Quincy Jones in to launch a new app that features artist-curated playlists to make it easier for users to sort through their monstrous catalogue. While at the event, the biggest producer in the history of pop music took quite the dig at one of his fellow producing brethren, P.Diddy – for basically knowing nothing about music.
At the Spotify event an audience member asked a question to which Jones chastised people to "learn your craft." Subsequently while speaking with Bruno Mars at the event, Jones said, "P. Diddy wouldn’t know a B-flat [if it hit him]." But he didn’t stop there, Jones took the opportunity to take a shot at Diddy’s many other non-musical ventures, "P. Diddy has a doctorate in marketing…. He’s got clothes companies and Ciroc vodka." Related: Diddy's Playboy Party Ooof! That’s harsh but the man does make some excellent points. If you are a music producer, you should probably know your craft, know music. Let’s be honest, Jones know music: his career spans five decades, he has been nominated for a record 79 Grammy Awards, won 27 Grammys, and is singled out as is the main producer of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, which has sold more than 110 million copies worldwide. The dude knows his sh*t! Jones has got a music pedigree that rivals any other in the business – he knows music and his career has proved that. Maybe Diddy, whose career is also nothing to scoff at, should listen to the music man -- if he wants to stand the test of time. Maybe less vodka tastings and more music classes every so often? Jones’s playlist for the Spotify app is as eclectic and varied as the icon’s career -- he has everything from Tiesto to Rancid and Disturbed on it. From the potshots at Diddy to his music selection Quincy had me – that is until he got to Disturbed. Really, Quincy? Now, that’s just embarrassing. UPDATE: Quincy Jones tweeted out the following statement, "No controversy, no diss. I have nothing but love and respect for Puffy and all that he has achieved as an artist and an executive. Always have and always will."
