LONDON LIBRARY PAID $14.3 MILLION FOR RARE COPY OF THE GOSPEL (468 hits)

A rare copy of the St. Cuthbert Gospel was purchased by the British Library at a price of 9 million pounds or 14.3 million in U.S. dollars from the British branch of the Society of Jesus Library. The book is described as being a manucript of the Gospel according to John. The well-cared for book dates back from the Anglo-Saxon period in the 17th century approimately 1,300 ago. This according to the library's chief executive, Lynne Brindley. The book measures 3.8 inches by 5.4 inches with a red leather cover. It's history comes from a time of St. Cuthbert who died in 687, was discovered inside his coffin in 1104 at Durham Catherdral. The coffin arrived in Durham after monks had it removed from the island of Lindisfame which is 330 miles north of London in order to protect remains of Vikings in the 9th and 10 centuries. Plans to have the book displayed at the London's library will be sometime next year.
