With the latest plague of poverty in the Greek community this one hits hardest when now families in poverty are beginning to abandoning their children. A recent news report stated that a growing number among the Greek population are leaving their children at school, or with religious organization because they lack jobs or ways to take care in feeding and clothing them. One Orthodox priest, Father Antionios discovered that he was left with four children on his doorstep just days ago, one being only a baby without any clue who the parents were. Another case a kindergarden teacher receiving a note to take care of her little girl, and yet another case of a charity organization was faced with malnourished twins in a hospital because their mother also malnourshed was unable to make breast milk. Father Antionios reported that one mother dropped her two-year old off after being fed a charitable meal simply disappeared. Father Antionios insists that no matter how bad off a family may be in poverty, the child is always better off with his/her family. He said that many times abandoning a child can lead to years of emotional scaring and low self esteem. One reason for the rise in family separations is Greece's economic crisis has resulted in it's welfare system is not equipped to deal with the growing numbers of families needs of daily survival.
