Tradgedy Rocks a Norway Island, 85 Dead When Gunman Dressed as a Police Officer Opens Fire (1568 hits)

(CNN) -- A gunman dressed as a policeman went on a shooting rampage in Norway's Utoya Island, leaving at least 85 confirmed dead and many wounded of the roughly 600 people who'd been attending the camp -- most of them teenagers.

The rural island some 20 miles from Norway's capital, was the prime destination for hundreds of young members of the country's Labour Party each summer to discuss politics and democracy and enjoy each other's company.

Utoya island, which can only be reached by boat, has been used by the Labour Party for its youth conference for decades, as well as a destination for family camping trips.

All that changed Friday when a gunman dressed as a policeman went on a shooting rampage there, leaving at least 85 confirmed dead and many wounded of the roughly 600 people who'd been attending the camp -- most of them teenagers.

Norway terror suspect Anders Breivik "acknowledges" carrying out a bombing and mass shootings that left scores dead on Friday, Judge Kim Heger said Monday, but Breivik said the attacks were necessary in light of the "treason" of the victims in promoting multiculturalism.

The judge ordered him held in custody for eight weeks until his next court appearance.

Authorities earlier said at least 93 people were killed and 96 wounded in the terror attacks, but today said there were fewer victims than previously thought.
