While Keyshia Cole took to her Twitter account early this week to tell fans she was not invited to this year’s Video Music Awards—the network’s most watched since 2002—a representative from MTV insists the singer never asked to attend.
“There is no record of Keyshia Cole or anyone from her camp requesting tickets to this year’s show,” the MTV rep wrote via email.
The question of whether or not the network considered Cole an “MTV artist” began Sunday night (Sept. 12), when a fan tweeted the 28-year-old singer asking if she was at the 2010 ceremony. The new mom responded: "..... MTV TOLD ME IM NOT A ........ MTV ARTIST.... SOOOOO."
When another fan quickly followed up by asking Cole for an explanation of what an "MTV artist" is, she responded "idk they're perception of who [I] am. i haven't crossed over yet.... i only sell 1.5 every album.. thats only 5 mill. in 5 years."
Cole attended and performed at this year's BET Awards alongside Eminem and B.o.B. On March 4 the 29-year-old singer gave birth to her first child with Cleveland Cavaliers player, Daniel Gibson.
Do you think MTV gave Keyshia the Cole shoulder, or should she take heed to the old saying “ask not, want not”? —John Kennedy
