It's always worthwhile to check the news from Washington late Friday afternoons. That's when the federal government, no matter which party is in power, traditionally releases news they hope you won't notice. Recently the Obama administration used this tactic to announce a retreat on the issue of federal funding of abortion, and it gives hope for those of us who defend life.
There's more we can do, though, and it's called the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. It would make a provision in federal law that applies to Medicare, bearing the name of the late Henry Hyde, a permanent part of federal law, and would extend its principles to all federal spending, as it should. There's virtually no chance that such a bill would receive consideration this year, but it is worth gauging whether those who would represent you in Congress next year would support it.

The health insurance reform bill Congress passed this year left the door open for the Department of Health and Human Services to offer taxpayer-financed abortions in the benefit plans it governs. That’s why CMC and so many other pro-life folks worked hard to have statutory language prohibiting public funding of abortion in the bill. Unfortunately, we lost that legislative battle.
