Friends or Foes (1353 hits)

It absolutely appalls me when someone you regarded as an enemy or foe, acts as if you are the best of friends. As if their memories of the past were somehow obscured by the present. I know it's best to let the past go, and I agree, however, when I disregard the past, I disregard the people as well and find it difficult to build a bridge at the very least. Once trust is violated, it can never be regained.

Facebook is an amusing social network. I don't know how many people from my past have tried to get back in touch, but somehow can't remember how they mistreated me or disrespected me long ago and act as if we were or even are at present friends. Thank goodness for the ability to block users on that site.

What do you think, should foes from the past be friends, or should there be some recompense or acknowledgment and apology for their transgressions before hand?

Clearly the wound is still very much present for you. I think at this point in your life, it's time to let it go. Most children are mean. It's sad, but it's true. And many times people (children) don't realize how much they are hurting someone at that time. It's about the "fun of it" all. How do you know they (those who hurt you) are not ready to apologize? You won't know until you let them in... I believe in giving a person an opportunity to redeem themselves (of course if the injustice is forgivable...some things may not be forgivable to some...jury is still out on that one for me). Holding on to old wounds eats at the soul...set your soul free. Why not tell them how you feel or felt back then. I'd think you'd be surprised by the responses. The thing with facebook is that although you are "reconnecting" with so many from your past, you have the control to hide, delete, unfriend, etc. etc. Open the door, let folks in, express how you feel, but more importantly...HEAL! ;-)

Be well

I had a colleague who I thought I was friends with only to find out she has been badmouthing me on my campus to my white colleagues and to other black academe types. I hope she rots in hell. She is leaving to go to another campus. Good riddance.

I feel that if someone hurt you in the past, it is possible they could still be the same way, What is the friendship worth to you. Some people are just better keep at a distance and that's the truth. Define friend , if the person does not fit the description then you know the rest" next"
