This blog is stemming from a twitter argument. Very silly, I know... but it is on a topic that is near and dear to me, people of bi- or multi-racial descent. This twitter person told me that since I can't check more than one box on the US Census, I need to pick one race and identify with it. This person is mistaken, because, in fact, as of 2000 there is a multi-racial box to check. Furthermore, how dare you put me into your tiny box as though I am unable to fully identify with each of my heritages? She went on to say that "everyone is mixed, there is no such thing as a pure race." I agree with that line of thought, but in keeping with that thinking, there should be NO boxes to check. Since there are and since society has clearly set up racial lines and boundaries, I will get in where I fit in. Would you like to know where that it? It is next to my red haired, livin' in Comanche grandmother, with my arm around my African American all American hunter, Papa, sipping tea, eating chit'lins, swinging my pale legs and letting my nappy hair blow in the wind. Take that. xxoo, Brandie
