Types of Driving Jobs to Consider if You Love Being on the Road (8730 hits)

Some people were born to have a steering wheel in their hands. Their sense of adventure runs deep, so finding a way to combine their passion for being on the road with earning a living is ideal. Here are a few jobs worth considering for anyone who can't get enough of being on the road.

Truck Driver

If you love being on the road, a job as a truck driver may be perfect for you. Truck drivers transport goods and materials from one location to another. They spend most of their time driving, but may also have to do some paperwork and basic vehicle maintenance.

The great thing about being a truck driver is that there are a few different types of trucking jobs to choose from. Long-haul drivers transport cargo over long distances, while local drivers make shorter trips within their area, and intermodal trucking jobs haul cargo containers back and forth from the train station, which is their second mode of transportation. There are also specialized types of trucking jobs, such as hauling hazardous materials or working as an ice road trucker in Northern Canada.

Bus or Coach Driver

When we think of buses we often envision those of a school or city transport nature. But don't forget about tour buses! These can be great driving jobs for those who love being on the road. The first perk is having great clientele. Most people riding in a tour bus are happy and excited to be there which creates a great atmosphere. Secondly, tour bus drivers often get to see some amazing places. You might even get the opportunity to step outside and sight-see a bit yourself!

There are also Greyhound bus drivers who operate on set routes and schedules, normally traveling long distances. This can be a great option for those who enjoy having a more predictable job.

Delivery or Rideshare Driver

If you love being on the road but don't necessarily want to be driving a large vehicle, then you might consider becoming a delivery or rideshare driver. Both of these types of jobs allow you to be your own boss and set your own hours, which can be great for those who appreciate flexibility. In addition, delivery and rideshare drivers get to interact with a variety of people, which can make the job more interesting. And of course, there's the added bonus of being able to listen to music or podcasts while you work!

Train Driver

More accurately called an Engineer, locomotive operators are responsible for the safe operation of trains. Train drivers must adhere to strict schedules and communicate with dispatch centers using two-way radios. Engineers also conduct safety checks before and after their shifts and are familiar with many other aspects of the rail system after often having done other jobs before becoming an engineer. Engineers can see a lot of the country from their unique vantage point, but the work can be demanding and schedules can be long and irregular.

While this list of jobs is just the beginning of a long list of traveling occupations, it's a great start for those who love the adventure of seeing many places and meeting lots of interesting people. No two days are exactly alike, and for some people, it's a perfect day in the office!
