ADA30: Increasing Access and Opportunity
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the National League of Cities published a blog written by ODEP Deputy Assistant Secretary Jennifer Sheehy on "ADA30: Increasing Access and Opportunity." The blog discusses the importance of involving all Americans, including individuals with disabilities, in local and municipal economic recovery and workforce development efforts. It also provides information on workplace flexibilities during the pandemic, such as accommodations, and highlights ways for policymakers and other government officials to promote and celebrate the ADA.
The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), as part of its work with the State Exchange on Employment & Disability (SEED), published a blog on "State Approaches Foster Retention and Better Outcomes for Workers with Disabilities." The blog highlights the benefits of worker retention for individuals and employers, as well as the state economy and workforce at large. It includes examples of recently enacted policies to increase retention and return-to-work outcomes of people with disabilities and those ill or injured on or off the job. The policies listed in the blog were gleaned from NCSL and SEED's report, "Work Matters: Making Progress in Employment for People with Disabilities."
The Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT) published a blog from ODEP Policy Advisor Scott Michael Robertson, Ph.D., on "AI for Good Shows Promise to Enhance Work Accessibility." The blog explores the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the accessibility of workplace programs and supports for people with disabilities, including personalized accommodations, accessible computer hardware and software, accessible on-the-job training, and more.
The Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT) posted a new episode of its Future of Work podcast series on "What is the Future of Autism Hiring Programs?" In the episode, Haley Moss, lawyer, author, and co-host of the Spectrumly Speaking podcast series, discusses the future of autism hiring programs and their impact on the recruitment and retention of neurodiverse employees.
