Alabama State University Faculty Member Wins National New Book Award (4536 hits)

A new book wins a national award that honors the “stories of women and those who tell them”

A Montgomery resident who is the chairwoman of Alabama State University's Department of Languages and Literatures, Dr. Jacqueline Trimble, has won a national Best Book of the Year Award by Seven Sisters Book Awards for her publication “American Happiness,” and become a finalist for Seven Sister's poetry category award.

Trimble’s Oct. 2016 released book is an eclectic collection of poems that addresses everything from the death of parents, racial tension, and even the encroachment of coyotes into urban spaces.

She said winning this award is very meaningful to her.

“The award means that someone who doesn't know me at all, complete strangers, read my work and found it worthy of their time and attention,” she said. “Further, they recommended it to others and called it ‘required reading.’ This means everything to me,” Trimble said.

A faculty member at ASU for almost 18 years, Trimble said that she has been writing poetry for almost all of that time.

“For me, the purpose of poetry is to get us to change our angle of reflection, to see the world from another point of view, another epistemology, and perhaps know the world differently than we did before we began,” Trimble said.
