Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. (Originally the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, it was not until 2 and 1/2 years later on June 19, 1865 that this proclamation was recognized.)
From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.
Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long over due. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.
The Englewood Mennonite Church of Mennonite Church USA, located at 832 West 68th Street, Chicago, Il 60621 will be celebrating JUNETEENTH on Saturday, June 20, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. organized by Pamela Dominguez.
I, Ms."E", of course will be there with my "STOP ABORTION NOW" poster in re this celebration as 38% of abortions performed in this country is by Black women.....abortion is mass genocide for our people as we are only 13% of the population in America! Every other ethic group has surpassed the population growth of African Americans. We MUST STOP KILLING OUR HERITAGE....BLACK, WHITE, ASIANS, SPANISH, ETC. Since the 1973 Roe v. Wade Decision, 50 Million plus people have been aborted in America alone!
