Are you a hospitality professional in Connecticut who is looking to transform the lives of our incarcerated population? If so, we have a unique opportunity for you to consider!

The State of Connecticut, Department, Department of Correction (DOC) Unified School District #1 is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Hospitality Instructor (Vocational Instructor) to teach about the core functions of the Hospitality Industry, including: Hotel & Front Office Operations, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, Lodging and Events & Meetings.

In this course, students will learn all aspects of the hospitality business such as how to utilize media related outreach, the accounting process and the integral nature of human resources (hiring, firing of staff, training and evaluation of employees). Students will also learn basic food preparation, and how to work in a wide range of departments within Hospitality and Hotel Management.

We are looking for candidates who possess a high school (or equivalency) diploma and eight (8) years of employment and/or teaching experience in the hospitality industry. Please see 'Minimum' and 'Preferred' Qualifications sections below for more information.

Please note: This recruitment may be used to fill openings in correctional facilities across the state. We encourage those who are interested in becoming a Hospitality Instructor with the DOC to apply directly to this recruitment.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

SCHEDULE: first-shift, full time (35 hours per week,) Monday through Friday
ACADEMIC CALENDAR: Unified School District (USD) #1 follows a 12-month school calendar, 222 school days per year.
LOCATION: York Correctional Institution (East Lyme, CT)
TRAINING: Selected candidates may be required to present a lesson plan in front of students in one of our Correctional Facilities as part of the interview process. Candidates selected for hire, are required to attend a fourteen (14) week training at the CT DOC Training Academy. More details can be found in the 'Selection Plan' of this job bulletin.
Candidates new to the State of Connecticut will start on ‘Step one’ of the pay plan, in the tier that their highest level of education corresponds to. Starting salary is non-negotiable. Salary details derived from the P-3B T1-T4 35 Hour Pay Plan.

YOUR ROLE

The Connecticut Department of Correction Unified School District #1 is dedicated to providing quality educational programs for incarcerated individuals. Academic knowledge, vocational competencies and life skills integrated with technology are offered to students in a positive environment to foster lifelong learning, multicultural awareness and a successful transition to society.

As a Vocational Instructor with the DOC, you will be responsible for:

Prioritizing safety and security as it pertains to staff, victims, citizens, and offenders;
Teaching early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subject, and/or special education curricula;
Developing educational plans for individuals and groups;
Setting short and long term goals and evaluating student progress;
Participating in planning team meetings and case review conferences to assess student behavior;
Holding conferences with parents or officials concerned with student performance;
Relating to professionals in ancillary educational roles;
Maintaining student records and writing reports;
Modeling positive teaching practices.

An understanding of the different types of learning styles of students and being able to teach to their ability levels.
The ability to work with a variety of different disciplines throughout the day.
Working knowledge of classroom routines and disciplines.
Outstanding personal and interpersonal skills.
The ability to follow the class schedule as provided by the school administration with the understanding that it may change unexpectedly.
Experience in Restaurant, Hotel, or Event Management;
Understanding of daily operations of Restaurants, Hotels, or Event Venues;
Experience in Training and Development for Hospitality or Entertainment Business Standard Operation Procedures.

Qualifications & Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
High School graduation or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and eight (8) years of employment and/or teaching experience in the subject field (hospitality).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
Incumbents in this class must meet the State Board of Education requirements to receive initial educator certificate to teach Vocational Education.

NOTE: Payment for employees on the extended schedule will be determined by the appropriate contract.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with teaching a diverse group of people;
Experience working in a correctional institution setting;
Experience teaching groups of people with differing levels of education;
Experience working at different supervisory levels in the Restaurant, or Hospitality Industries,
Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality & Tourism Management
