Kentucky State Geologist and Geological Survey Director
The University of Kentucky’s Office of the Vice President for Research is seeking experienced candidates to apply for the position of Director of the Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) and State Geologist. This senior level position reports to the Vice President for Research and is responsible for administration of the Survey, including managing a $4.3M budget, personnel, research programs, productivity, and program prioritization. The Director will develop strategic plans for KGS and new research, service, and facility programs; develop resources for new priorities and conduct research activities to develop new programs. In addition, this position leads a team of 50, including the associate director and research heads. They will supervise the professional conduct of the Survey’s activities, mandated programs, and geological investigations of the state, as well as the development and implementation of policies and strategic plans for the Survey. The KGS Director represents the University and participates in local, state, and national committees and advises state agencies on geoscience issues.

Qualified candidates will have a PhD in Geology and at least 10 years of related experience in geological areas. Candidates should have an established research program, budget management experience, excellent communication skills, and leadership experience. Additional strengths will include skill with strategic planning; systems improvements; effective personnel management; excellent organizational and planning skills; attention to detail and follow-through; strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work cooperatively and collegially with others and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

This position will have a faculty appointment if the selected candidate’s prior work history, skills and qualifications align with the discipline specific unit missions.
