Job Description
The CDO-VPDEIB is a senior leader who provides vision, leadership, and strategic direction for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) and serves as a catalyst to promote a culture of inclusive excellence across Newberry’s campus, where individuals from all racial and ethnic identities, ages, nationalities, social and economic status, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religious, political, and ideological perspectives, and physical and mental abilities are able to thrive and be engaged.

Reporting directly to the President and sitting on the President’s Council, the CDO-VPDEIB serves as the senior DEIB officer for the college with responsibility for refining and implementing a comprehensive strategic plan to advance DEIB programs, policies, and practices on Newberry’s campus. The CDO-VPDEIB interfaces regularly with all Vice Presidents and Divisions to ensure that active and viable initiatives are being developed and implemented across the College. The CDO-VPDEIB also chairs the College’s DEIB Advisory Council and works collaboratively with stakeholders across campus and in the community. The CDO-VPDEIB currently has no supervisory responsibilities but is expected to develop strong institutional partnerships. Supervisory responsibilities may change in the future.

Strategic Leadership
The CDO-VPDEIB provides strategic vision and leadership for integrating DEIB into the work of Newberry College, working closely a range of other campus stakeholders to shape and implement strategies and plans aligned with institutional goals and the mission of the College: the College’s Executive and President’s Councils as well as student leadership, staff and faculty, DEIB point persons on campus, the DEIB Advisory Council, alumni, community partners, and other friends of the College:

• Facilitates and coordinates DEIB strategic planning, prioritization, and implementation in collaboration with ongoing efforts related to existing DEIB initiatives and the 2021 DEIB Strategic Plan;
• Conducts periodic campus climate surveys and disseminates findings;
• Works with other Vice Presidents to advance and support DEIB in their areas:
o Administrative Affairs & Human Resources
o Academic Affairs
o Student Affairs
o Enrollment Management
o Institutional Advancement
o Athletics
• Collaborates with other key entities on campus, including but not limited to
o Student Government Association (SGA)
o Faculty Council
o Staff Council
Education, Communication, & Outreach
The CDO-VPDEIB coordinates a variety of DEIB programming across the College in close collaboration with DEIB point persons:
• Proposes and supports the development of institutional programming related to DEIB, including but not limited to:
o Intercultural competency development for staff and faculty,
o Curricular and co-curricular programming for students,
o Public events related to DEIB for the College and the surrounding community
• Supports the work of the Dufford Diversity & Inclusion Week director and committee.
• Facilitates campus conversations in response to campus, national, and global events related to DEIB.
The CDO-VPDEIB establishes effective modes of communication about ongoing DEIB initiatives, strategic and programmatic, at Newberry College:
• Creates and implements communication strategies for social media and print materials and ensures a robust and meaningful presence on the College website;
• Serves as a spokesperson for the College on matters related to DEIB;
• Forms and cultivates strategic partnerships with individuals and organizations beyond the College to advance its DEIB efforts.

Recruitment & Retention
The CDO-VPDEIB collaborates with Human Resources to develop strategic hiring and retention efforts to attract and retain highly talented, diverse personnel: faculty, staff, and coaches.
• Partners with Human Resources and hiring committees to develop and deploy initiatives that broaden the college’s outreach to diverse, qualified job candidates;
• Engages stakeholders to ensure policies and practices are in place to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace;
• Collaborates with relevant campus stakeholders to promote professional development and support for minoritized personnel.

The CDO-VPDEIB collaborates with Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and Athletics to ensure the recruitment and retention of students from underserved and historically marginalized communities and to create opportunities for increased access and sustained mentorship.

Advice, Reporting, & Guidance
The CDO-VPDEIB serves as the senior advisor to the President and College leadership on initiatives and issues related to DEIB and campus climate as it relates to students, staff, and faculty.
• Collects, analyzes, monitors, and disseminates institutional data to benchmark and promote accountability for DEIB at Newberry College;
• Identifies opportunities for institutional improvement;
• Ensures the development and communication of related college policies, standards, and procedures;
• Serves as an advocate, mentor, and resource for concerns and issues related to DEIB.
Qualifications & Requirements
The ideal candidate will be a professional in the broader field of DEIB and organizational change with a demonstrated track record of successfully addressing and implementing DEIB goals in an institution of higher education or similarly complex organization. Qualified applications must have graduate-level preparation in addition to experience. The successful candidate will be an innovative, strategic, and results-oriented leader with a broad vision for the role of DEIB in achieving institutional excellence. They must be adept at facilitating difficult discussions, shepherding change, creating and strengthening partnerships, and aligning an array of efforts across the institution. Specifically, successful candidates will possess:

• Knowledge of contemporary issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and institutional racism, including the current scholarship and best practices that inform and address such issues;
• Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging programs, policies, and procedures and leading organizational change;
• Technical mastery of diversity advancement—e.g. faculty recruitment and retention strategies and cultural competency in the curriculum.
• Cross-cultural competency and commitment to policies and practices in all areas of the institution that engage diverse, intercultural, and intersectional viewpoints and identities.
• Ability to develop and communicate a common vision that resonates authentically with students, staff, and faculty and that engages and leverages other senior leaders;
• Sophisticated relational abilities and excellent communication and conflict-resolution skills: to build trust, consensus, and credibility; to navigate complex institutional and community landscapes; to respond quickly and appropriately to sensitive situations; to navigate politically-charged situations; and to reconcile competing interests;
• In-depth perspective on organizational change that appreciates the various contexts, cultures, and politics within institutions that impact the effective implementation of DEIB change efforts;
• Analytical skills to provide oversight for assessments related to campus climate and DEIB by establishing DEIB metrics and to measuring process, key milestones, and outcomes.
• Knowledge of laws, regulations, and guidelines related to DEIB and nondiscrimination in higher education, including Title IX, Title VI, Title VII, Clergy Act, ADEA, ADA, and Section 504.
