How will you make an impact?

The individual will work as part of the Cell Biology R&D team to develop new products in cell and gene therapy and protein expression fields within the Thermo Fisher product commercialization process under the Gibco™ brand. As a member of the R&D team, you will aid in growing our capabilities related to scaling up cell culture processes to support ongoing programs and applications data.

The candidate will possess a background in mammalian/insect cell culture for protein expression or viral vector (AAV, LV, etc.) production. Experience with operating, optimizing and troubleshooting stirred tank bioreactors is a plus.

What will you do?

The successful candidate will:

  • Culture mammalian and insect cell lines in stirred tank and rocking motion bioreactors for required experimental objectives.
  • Assist in cell counting and daily measurements to monitor cell culture performance.
  • Work with micorobioreactor systems (Ambr 15 and Ambr 250) to implement process improvement strategies for scaling up production of biologics.
  • Be flexible, helping the team where needed to address high priority demands.
  • Work in a matrix environment to conceive, design, and implement strategies to address current challenges associated with virus production and downstream characterization assays.
  • Assist in evaluating new technologies.
  • Assist in customer applications support for existing products.
  • Maintain accurate lab notebooks and training files in accordance with relevant Thermo Fisher required standards to support patent application and defense as well as other international standards (e.g., ISO compliance, GLP/GMP requirements, etc.).
  • Perform literature searches related to products under development and new idea generation.
  • Work with customers to troubleshoot problems and understand unmet needs.
  • Interact with scientists in other business units to troubleshoot problems and identify new opportunities.

How will you get here?

Education

  • B.S. degree in Cell Biology, Virology or relevant scientific field with 3-5 years of relevant academic or industry experience, or M.S. degree with 1-2 years relevant academic or industry experience.

Experience

  • Prior experience expressing proteins and producing viral vectors (AAV and LV) in mammalian and insect cells from shake flask to bioreactor scales (1-10L+).
  • Knowledge of transient mammalian (plasmid) and insect (baculovirus) systems for protein expression and virus production a plus.

  • Must enjoy working with scientists engaged in research and development of products in the forefront of cell and molecular biology.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interpret, summarize, and present scientific results in a clear, concise, accurate manner to both technical and non-technical audiences.
