Associate/Full Professor for the Irwin Belk Distinguished Professor in Biology
The Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte
(https://biology.charlotte.edu/) seeks applicants for a tenured Associate/Full Professor for the Irwin Belk
Distinguished Professor in Biology, beginning August 15th, 2022. Required qualifications for this
position include: a Ph.D. in the biological sciences or related fields with expertise in immunology, hostpathogen interactions genome integrity, cancer biology, or responses to the environment and/or stress; a demonstrated proficiency in the discipline by a record of extramural funding and peer-reviewed
publications, appropriate to rank; a commitment to teach and mentor a diverse student population at the
undergraduate and graduate levels; and an ability to substantially expand current department
collaborative teams and funded research programs and a passion for mentoring and leading early-career
faculty to success.

The successful candidate will be expected to sustain an established, independent, externally funded,
internationally recognized research program that will enhance the biomedical research of the department
in the interconnected areas of health, environment, and genomics. The successful candidate will be
expected to fully participate in team science efforts in the department as well as enhance cooperation
between the Biological Sciences, and other academic units, colleges, and programs at the university. The
successful candidate will be expected to successfully contribute to teaching of undergraduate and
graduate curricula, including courses in the areas of physiology, health and the environment, and/or
biotechnology.

The department supports BA, BS, MS and PhD programs with a diverse body of faculty and students,
with multiple hands-on training opportunities. The department is fully committed to providing an

inclusion. Research affinity groups within the department include Host-Microbe Interactions, Genome
Integrity, and Biomolecular Structure and Function that are part of a larger effort to build research
programs within a central theme of Integrated Health and Environmental Research interconnected with
other related academic units including Chemistry, Physics & Optical Sciences, Geography & Earth
Sciences, Mathematics, and Bioinformatics.

As the largest and most diverse college at UNC Charlotte, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences houses
21 departments in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and
military sciences, as well as 28 applied research centers and interdisciplinary programs. With its 34
