Stanford’s top-ranking Medical Center Development (MCD) team continues to build upon the generous support of its donor community, and is in the early stages of planning the next major fundraising effort in which Stanford Medicine will have newly-defined philanthropic priorities in alignment with the Stanford University-wide strategic vision. We anticipate fundraising around groundbreaking initiatives such as the Innovative Medicines Accelerator, a new Department for Health Policy, the new Stanford Cancer Center, expanded state of the art research facilities that bring together basic science, translational medicine and clinical care, expanded clinical programs and facilities in the South and East Bay, as well as other Stanford Medicine fundraising priorities.

Within this framework, we seek experienced candidates for a new Senior Director of Development, Stanford Health Care to join the MCD leadership team. The Senior Director will lead a specialist team focused on supporting the priorities of Stanford Medicine, and will play a fundamental role in securing lead philanthropy for these efforts. The position requires deep fundraising experience, sensitivity, diplomacy, discretion, professional judgement, as well as the demonstrated ability to lead, inspire and mentor teams. If you have the leadership and strategic skills to balance prospect identification and solicitation, build donor-centric and meaningful relationships, develop, execute and measure progress toward strategic objectives, and partner effectively with academic leadership, faculty, senior staff, and fellow MCD and university development colleagues, then this position is for you. This position reports to the Associate Vice President for Medical Center Development.

Job Purpose:

The Senior Director will plan and implement a fundraising program primarily focused on Stanford Health Care priorities. They will directly manage a portfolio of approximately 40-50 major gifts prospects rated at $250,000 - $10M. The position also partners with other “specialists” (fundraisers with faculty management and prospect portfolios) and “generalists” (fundraisers focused solely on prospect portfolios) within MCD and other fundraisers across the university to cultivate potential donors for Stanford Medicine priorities. This position works directly with hospital leadership, senior administrators, and clinical faculty to source prospects (mostly grateful patients), manage and develop the donor and prospective donor pipeline, cultivate and solicit gifts directly and with colleagues, and engage lead volunteers in all aspects of this work as appropriate. They will also manage a team of three full-time staff.

Your responsibilities include:

- Playing a vital role in setting overall fundraising strategy for Stanford Medicine with a focus on Stanford Health Care priorities.
- Working with fellow Senior Directors of Development to develop solicitation goals, objectives, and strategies for development projects and/or specific donor populations or geographic regions.
- Providing support for Stanford Medicine leaders, faculty, senior staff, and volunteers and accompany them on calls where appropriate.
- Personally managing an active portfolio, and tracking solicitation assignments and progress. Working with a portfolio of assigned prospects to cultivate, solicit, and steward their support.
- Working with grateful patients, hospital and school executive leadership, community members, alumni, parents, and friends of Stanford Medicine and their advisors, and working behind the scenes through high-level volunteers, both external and internal to the university.
- Collaborating with other staff, academic leaders, and faculty to develop gift ideas and strategies and to foster relationships that will be productive for Stanford Medicine.
- Maintaining a current body of knowledge about Stanford Medicine’s development priorities, as well as the university-wide priorities of the president and provost.
- Collaborating with other teams within Medical Center Development, particularly Major Gift Specialist and Generalist teams, Planned Giving, Research, Stewardship, and Development Communications.
- Managing and mentoring staff; setting and measuring annual performance goals.
- A commitment to promoting and supporting an environment of diversity and inclusion.
Qualifications & Requirements
To be successful in this position, you will bring:

- Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
- Ability to develop long-term relationships with donors and prospects. Previous experience in a campaign is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams and collaborate across work groups, departments and functions.
- Proven skills in managing a number of competing priorities and complex issues creatively and effectively. This may include long-range strategic fundraising, donor development, and volunteer engagement with the day-to¬-day operations.
- Proven ability to make independent decisions and accurately forecast and deliver results.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and engage through highly effective presentations and communication. A clear and confident communication style which shows spirit, enthusiasm, and integrity.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the proven ability to collaborate, build team spirit, and achieve results within diverse populations.
- Ability to meet deadlines and function effectively in a complex organizational environment demanding a high energy level, discretion, and flexibility.
- Demonstrated abilities to be adaptable and thrive in an environment of ambiguity. Work will and successfully in a constantly evolving setting.
- Strong skills with information systems, prospect tracking and/or other systems used to manage external relations functions.
- Valid California Non-commercial Class Driver's License.

Physical Requirements*:
- Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, sit, and use a telephone, stand/walk.
- Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.

Working Conditions:

May require working flexible hours, including nights and weekends. Regular travel may be required.
Valid passport for international travel.
