Job Description
Finance Associate
Open Philanthropy is aiming to hire a Finance Associate (title flexible) to oversee our bookkeeping and finance operations. Our staff of ~40 currently gives away over $150 million per year with the aim of doing as much good as we can per dollar, in causes like criminal justice reform, farm animal welfare, and potential risks from advanced artificial intelligence. Over the next decade, we plan to increase our giving by several times while continuing to raise our bar for impact.

We will be evaluating applications on a rolling basis, and will keep this job posting up until the role is filled. If you have any questions about applying, please contact jobs@openphilanthropy.org.

About the Role

In this role, you would work closely with our Director of Operations and Grants Manager to manage all aspects of our day-to-day finance operations, and look for ways to improve them further. This would include:

- Managing all accounts payable.
- Managing staff expense reporting, and troubleshooting finance-related questions from staff and contractors.
- Working closely with our external accounting firm(s), and acting as a liaison between them and Open Phil’s operations team.
- Onboarding Open Phil contractors.
- Owning the review and maintenance of our monthly financial statements.
- Preparing financial analyses to help the organization make decisions related to operations and grant-making.
- Planning and executing projects to improve the team’s efficiency and effectiveness.
Qualifications & Requirements
About You

We think this might be a particularly exciting role for someone interested in taking ownership of building out a young, growing organization’s finance function. While we’re open to many levels of seniority and experience, a successful candidate with a solid background in accounting can expect to have significant autonomy in deciding what projects to take on, how their work should be done, and how we should plan for the future of our finance operations.

You might be a good fit if you:

- Have experience managing or executing accounting and other finance operations in the context of a business, nonprofit or foundation (a CPA is preferred but not required).
- Enjoy work that demands speed, accuracy and extreme attention to detail.
- Think in terms of systems, and have a track record of suggesting improvements when you notice something isn’t working optimally.
- Have good interpersonal and communication skills, and would be happy in a role involving frequent back-and-forth with staff and external stakeholders.
- You share and seek information, including critical feedback, and are able to explain your views with good reasoning transparency.
- If this sounds like you, and if you are interested in using your finance and accounting expertise at an organization dedicated to improving the world as much as possible, we hope you’ll apply. We’d also be willing to consider individuals with significantly more experience and would be open to customizing and expanding the job duties based on skills, experience, and fit with Open Phil’s needs.

Additional Information

- The baseline compensation for this role is $80,500, which includes a base salary of $70,000 and an unconditional 401(k) grant of $10,500. However, we are willing to consider a higher compensation for more experienced candidates, in line with our compensation principles, and we would encourage you not to let uncertainty about salary deter you from applying. The start date is flexible, but mid-July or early August 2020 is preferred.
- This is a full-time position, which could be done fully remotely or from our San Francisco office. The salary listed above is based on the cost of living in the San Francisco Bay Area or New York City; please note there are cost of living adjustments downward for employees based in other locations.
- We offer a comprehensive benefits package including full health, dental, vision and life insurance, an unconditional 401(k) grant of 15% of your salary up to $19,500, flexible work hours and location, a stipend for ergonomic equipment and other benefits.
- Currently, all OP staff are working from home due to COVID-19 and will continue to do so until it is deemed safe to work from the SF office.

We are committed to fostering a culture of inclusion and encourage individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply. We especially encourage applications from self-identified women and people of color who are excited about contributing to our mission. Open Philanthropy is an equal opportunity employer. If you need assistance or an accommodation due to a disability, or have any other questions about applying, please contact jobs@openphilanthropy.org.
