Senior Immigration Specialist
Purpose: The incumbent will act as the primary point of contact for an identified group of Directorates, HR partners, and foreign nationals to provide direction and guidance on viable immigration avenues for employment.
Educates, counsels and communicates Immigration Services practices within ORNL to identified groups in order to facilitate compliance and process visa petitions. Maintain up-do-date knowledge of immigration laws, regulations, practices, and trends. Determines when an escalation requires legal review.
Review and evaluate all pertinent information and documents related to foreign national employment candidates and employees to ensure compliance with the DHS, DOS, TN-DOL, and DOE laws/regulations
Process visa petitions and other documents related to the employment of foreign national employees at ORNL in the categories of H-1B, TN, E-3, OPT, and O-1.
Track visa statuses and work with foreign national employees to renew and maintain an employable visa status
Serve as the Alternate Responsible Officer for UT-Battelle’s J-1 Exchange Visitor program
Process DS-2019’s and other documents related to J-1 Exchange Visitors at ORNL, and conduct orientation with J-1 visitors upon arrival at ORNL
Serve as initial point of contact for forms and submission for Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) applications
Monitor cases as they progress in the permanent resident process, communicating with outside attorney as necessary
Collect and verify data and information, maintain files and filing systems, and assist with metrics and annual reporting.
Conduct internal audits of H1B and J-1 clients
Provide backup support to other Immigration Services staff as needed
Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
Qualifications & Requirements Qualifications Required:
Bachelor’s degree with eight plus years relevant experience, or an associate degree with ten plus years of relevant experience is required.
Competence and a strong working knowledge of complex state and federal regulations and legislative issues surrounding immigration law.
Excellent interpersonal, organization, time management, oral and written communication and problem-solving skills, with an emphasis on customer interaction with sponsoring organizations and foreign nationals.
Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and accurate, set priorities appropriately and work on multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment is required.
Working capabilities in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Experience in working with information of a business sensitive nature, with proven ability to meet this responsibility in a professional and ethical manner.
Must be a citizen of the United States or a lawful permanent resident of the United States and must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check as required by the DOS.
Qualifications Desired: Prior human resources work experience in a multicultural, scientific environment is highly desirable.
Work Direction and Interfaces: Reports to Director, Diversity & International Office. Interfaces with Office of General Counsel and outside legal counsel on visa issues as required and acts as liaison for employees being financially sponsored by ORNL for permanent residency.
