Senior Utilities Mechanical/Electrical Technician
Job Summary: Serves as a lead mechanic, primarily in the field or the office as assigned. Assists the Superintendent in the cross-training of the maintenance group. Serves as foreperson for other maintenance personnel; Assists other mechanics and maintenance personnel with the maintenance of our systems. Assists with the management of the Cityworks program. Assists with the management of all outside maintenance contracts; performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

Serves as lead mechanic in the maintenance of all MetCom systems, oversees the servicing, repairing and/or replacing of all water, collection, and treatment equipment by MetCom mechanics, as well as outside contractors
Identifies and implements necessary process or equipment changes and notifies Superintendent of same
Serves as a foreman for other maintenance personnel by monitoring and directing their activities
May provide training and guidance to staff regarding safety and maintenance procedures, and other skills as required
Troubleshoots and assists with the maintenance of a variety of mechanical and electrical equipment and makes recommendations for proper repairs
Takes charge of retrofitting existing equipment with new gear, such as budget items, etc.
Maintains a variety of operational and maintenance logs, reports and other forms
Performs ground and building maintenance
Operates and maintains motor vehicles, farm, construction and lawn maintenance equipment
Maintains full certification status in the classes required by the Certification Board
Performs other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission policies and procedures
Ability to act as a representative of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission to the public
Ability to serve as a lead worker and to train and provide technical guidance to other staff as directed
Ability to safely operate various equipment and make equipment repairs
Knowledge of safety regulations and established procedures for maintenance and testing
Ability to wear appropriate PPE for confined space entry including respiratory gear
Education and Experience:

High school diploma or E.D.
Seven years or more of experience working in the field of maintenance (relative to water distribution and wastewater collection)
Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience
Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Work requires occasional strenuous effort. For example, handling of moderately heavy tools or equipment, or materials of 30 to 60 pounds or more. Work involves high risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, or machines. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, goggles, boots and gloves; may require working in adverse weather conditions or confined work spaces.
