Job Summary

The Digital Scholarship Specialist partners with students, faculty, staff, and librarians to enhance learning, teaching, and scholarship through the application of technologies and knowledge of emerging digital research methods across disciplines. The Digital Scholarship Specialist contributes expertise in critical engagement with new and established technologies that impact discovery and inquiry, research workflows and productivity, and engagement with library collections and data. The Digital Scholarship Specialist consults and teaches in-person, online, and in hybrid learning environments to enable exploration, creation, and the sharing of scholarly work.

The Digital Scholarship Specialist will be part of a team of functional specialists in Connected Scholarship, including the Digital Scholarship Strategist and Digital Pedagogy Librarian, who often serve as the initial point of contact and collaboration for members of the university community as they begin digital research and teaching projects.

The development of digital scholarship and consultation services is part of the Next Century Library Initiative, the U-M Library’s strategy to reshape services and spaces. The Next Century Library Initiative will formalize and pull together under one umbrella many of the recent efforts to re-think and re-imagine the role of the Library as it works toward meeting the future needs of a student population and faculty whose demands are shifting in an increasingly digital era.

Reporting Structure
The Digital Scholarship Specialist reports to the Director of Connected Scholarship in the Learning and Teaching division and will be a member of the ScholarSpace team within Connected Scholarship. Learning and Teaching advances next century literacies, guides learning, and inspires curiosity through its programs and partnerships. Connected Scholarship maximizes the impact of the library and empowers learners at all levels by building sustainable, ethical, and mutually transformative relationships between people, collections, methods, and knowledge. ScholarSpace is a community-driven learning environment designed to enable creation, consultation, and collaboration around emerging practices in scholarship, teaching, and learning.

Supervisory Experience: The Digital Scholarship Specialist may provide functional supervision of student employees.

Job Responsibilities

Collaborate with the Digital Scholarship Service Team and campus partners to provide leadership for the library’s critical engagement with new and established technologies and methods that impact a particular focus on project based initiatives
Serve as a member of the Text and Data Mining Task Force and partner with stakeholders across the library to provide leadership for the library’s evolving text and data mining services
Manage relationships with vendors and maintains awareness of free and licensed resources for text and data mining
Provide consultation and advocacy to help faculty, students, and staff from across disciplines to develop skills in digital scholarship
Promote inclusive teaching practices and demonstrate a commitment to accessibility in the development and delivery of services and programs
Coordinate the programming and promotion of ScholarSpace workshops
Establish policies, assessment strategies, and creates documentation around digital exhibits
Partner with staff from the Library Information Technology team to support new and existing digital exhibit owners as the service lead for the library’s use of Omeka
Participate in ongoing learning and professional development relevant to position responsibilities and areas of interest to advance the mission of the library

Benefits, rank, salary

Appointment is anticipated at the Assistant or Associate Librarian rank. Salary and rank dependent on the candidate's qualifications and experience. Librarian appointments carry with them increased expectations regarding professional development, professional engagement, research, and service, in keeping with the library's process for librarian promotion and advancement.

The target salary range for this position is $53,000 - $65,000. The actual salary offered may vary based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

This position receives 24 days of vacation a year, paid sick leave with provisions for extended benefits, as well as opportunities for professional development and travel. TIAA-CREF and Fidelity Investments retirement options available.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required Qualifications

ALA-accredited master's degree or equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience
Experience and demonstrated expertise in text and data mining methodologies, including knowledge relevant to the acquisition, preparation, and use of data sets and texts from free and licensed resources
Experience with project management, including planning, communication, and assessment
Demonstrated commitment to assisting individuals with a variety of levels of expertise and ability in their use and experimentation with technology
Demonstrated interest and capacity for developing and sustaining relationships within the Library, across campus academic and administrative units in a professional manner
Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills
Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development in order to be agile in responding to the ever-changing needs of the campus community
Ability to understand diverse perspectives and acknowledge the significance of differences and complexities in background, cultures, values and viewpoints as the foundation for an inclusive environment
